TESTING REQUIREMENTS

You are not required to test or wear rank. Testing is a private decision. If you choose to test it should be used as a touchstone to both appreciate what you have learned and to reveal your next tasks. The following skills are expected to be shown at every level:

ORANGE BELT REQUIREMENTS

  • Self care: Wrist stretches, Hanmi centering, landing position
  • Hanmi changes, irimi entry and 2 steps, Kokyu Dosa
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form up to the ta-da block
  • Cane: Spins and twirls, Strikes with 2 steps
  • 5 basic sword strikes starting from either side
  • Aikido based technique: Tsuki kote gaeshi (no pin), Jab yamahaeshi irimi
  • Handshake kokyu ho, Kata-dori nikkyo tenkan

 

GREEN BELT REQUIREMENTS

  • All previous techniques plus
  • Self care: Sit falls, all blends, Tai no henko, rowing/balance exercises
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form through first section
  • Cane: All cane starting positions, All strikes and defenses
  • Cane suburi and cane kata
  • Aikido based technique: Ikkyo to Yonkyo series, irimi and tenkan from any attack

BLUE BELT REQUIREMENTS

  • All previous techniques plus
  • Self care: All forward rolls, all strikes (jab, cross, step through punch, hook, upper cut, kata menuchi, pushes, etc) with hand variations, basic kicks
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form through second section cloud hands
  • Cane: Cane against unarmed person; Strikes, throws, sweeps, chokes
  • Cane jiyu waza with unarmed attackers
  • Aikido based technique: All from grabs, front and ushiro, (katate, hiji, kata, morote, ryote, ryo kata, lapel)
  • Irimi nage, Kokyu ho, Kokyu nage, Kote gaeshi, Kaiten nage Koshi, Gokyu, Rokyu,
  • 5+ Unique variations from grabs
  • Jiyu waza from any grab

PURPLE BELT REQUIREMENTS

  • All previous techniques plus
  • Self care: Backward rolls, energy ball & puppetry exercises, breath extensions
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form through the second section
  • Cane: Cane on cane practices, Cane on knife/chair
  • Cane jiyu waza with armed attackers
  • Aikido based technique: All from strikes (jab, cross, tsuki, hook, upper cut, menuchi, push)
  • Irimi nage, Kokyu ho, Kokyu nage, Kote gaeshi, Kaiten nage Koshi, Gokyu, Rokyu,
  • 5+ Unique variations from strikes
  • Jiyu waza from straight strikes

BROWN BELT REQUIREMENTS

  • All previous techniques plus
  • Self care: High falls, back falls, 8+ treasure exercises
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form at practice speed
  • Cane: Cane take aways, jiyu waza with armed and unarmed attackers
  • Aikido based technique: Elbow variations, Chokes, Knife and gun takeaways
  • Multiple attackers, from grabs and strikes,Techniques to deal with kicks
  • 5+ Unique variations from circular strikes
  • Jiyu waza from all strikes

BLACK BELT REQUIREMENTS

  • All previous techniques plus
  • Self care: All ukemi, all stretches and exercises, multiple meditations
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form at the slowest speed
  • Cane: All cane techniques, throws, partner practices, all katas, all takeaways
  • Aikido based technique: All techniques, all multiple attacks, free form jiyu waza, reversals, hanmi handachi techniques, all weapons takeaways, unique variations, self defense applications

TEACHING CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS

  • All previous techniques plus
  • Self care: All self care exercises and meditations from book, weight training and core strength exercises
  • Tai Chi: 108 long form slow and fast, 33 short form
  • Cane: Complete knowledge of all techniques and principles,
  • Development of unique style and techniques,
  • Aikido based technique: Self defense seminar, understanding of all techniques and principles, exceptional communication skills, familiarity with other arts

BadAss Cane Teaching Certification also available
